Medical Student Clerkships
The residency offers both sub-internships and clinical electives in family medicine for third and fourth year medical students. The sub-internship is a four-week rotation working as a member of the Family Medicine Inpatient Hospital Team. Students should expect a broad experience, including ICU, placement of central lines and ventilator management consistent with our program's emphasis on preparation for rural practice. While on the service, students will be on call with the R1 on the service, averaging approximately every fifth night and will function as much as possible as a first-year resident. Students will spend approximately one-fourth of their time (depending on the sub-I requirement of your school) seeing patients in the Pocatello Family Medicine Clinic.
A four-week clinical elective or preceptorship is also available. The curriculum for this rotation is more flexible and may include inpatient and outpatient family medicine, obstetrics, nursing home care, sports medicine, emergency medicine and community health center experience. Interested students are encouraged to call to discuss specific preferences.
The Residency may reimburse some travel to and from Pocatello, if the student will be interviewing for a residency position during his/her rotation.
The interested medical student must have completed his/her third year family medicine clerkship prior to beginning the rotation at Idaho State University. Students should complete this application, (use this link to open or download the pdf file application - 16k) Do not hesitate to call, if you have any questions or comments.
