Family Medicine

Family medicine is taught throughout the three-year program, both in the Family Medicine Center and by involvement with family practice faculty on inpatient rotations.

First year residents spend 1-2 half days per week in the Family Medicine Clinic (seeing an average of four to five patients per half day); second year residents spend 2-3 half days (seeing an average of five to six patients per half day); and third-year residents spend 3-4 half days (seeing an average of seven to eight patients per half day). During clinic time, residents build a practice consisting of families and individuals for which they are responsible. Residents follow these patients through hospitalizations, surgeries, obstetrical deliveries or nursing home admissions, as much as possible.

In addition, residents will be taught procedural skills, including esophago-gastroduodenoscopy, flexible nasolaryngoscopy, colposcopy and sigmoidoscopy. It is our hope that residents will continue to perform these procedures after they settle into a rural community. Residents will participate in ACLS, ATLS, PALS, ALSO and Neonatal Resuscitation courses. Other courses are available.

Educational conferences are held each week, plus one half day every other Thursday. Subjects include a wide range of specialty topics.
